![]() The absence of this all-knowing narrator - or one, at least, made wiser by hindsight - cleverly obscures Raghavan’s own position in the whole affair: Is he showing us a simple good-versus-bad tale? Is he taking a side at all? Is he shifting allegiances from performer to performer nimbly, like a tightrope-walker with a roving eye? No Hindi film director treats noir as finely and uncompromisingly as Sriram Raghavan, making the most of each shadow and each secret, feeding us lies and making us read between them, his films unfolding with the stark alacrity of well-thumbed graphic novels.īadlapur is all fury and fog, a revenge saga that plays out with such eyebrow-singeing intensity that I could imagine a gravel-voiced narrator filling us in on dames and dreams and dark, stormy nights. In the world of noir, Right is less a fact and more a perspective - a shifting perspective, even - and one that must ideally be questioned. Or should we be standing here instead, where we can see what he’s holding behind his back, an anniversary present or a bloodied knife? ![]() Is this character in the right, or is he merely stage-right? ![]() ![]() ![]() Eastwood remains capable of producing a stunner after a string of underwhelming efforts. But it’s impossible to trace a pattern of decline. Sometimes the approach produces classics, sometimes it doesn’t. He likes to work fast with little rehearsal and few takes, often operating from screenplays still in the same shape they were in when the draft first landed on his desk, now an anomaly in an industry that loves rewrites, reshoots, and market-tested ideas. Nobody turning out films at Eastwood’s pace can be great all the time. Now 89, he’s been prolific and unpredictable ever since, usually turning out a film a year, sometimes two, that have ranged from police thrillers to melodramas to an old-fashioned musical. That phase reached a kind of culmination with the 1992 film Unforgiven, a Western of undeniable artistic achievement that would go on to win the Best Picture Oscar, and the years that followed found Eastwood redoubling his efforts to pursue whatever project appealed to him. By the time Eastwood had started to be accepted as a proficient director of genre movies thanks to The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Gauntlet, his ambitions had already deepened, as had his commitment to making movies that explored and toyed with his own big-screen image. Eastwood was the Man With No Name and Dirty Harry first everything else came second. Though he’s often intertwined the two strands of his career, it’s directing more than acting that’s been Eastwood’s focus ever since, even if the public and the press tended to treat it as a sideline hobby during the early years. With his money from those movies, Eastwood formed the Malpaso Company (later Malpaso Productions), with an eye toward exerting more control over the material in which he appeared - and eventually directing, which he began doing with the 1971 thriller Play Misty for Me. Those films became worldwide hits that made Eastwood into a big-screen icon, but just as soon as he’d shaken off his TV-star image, he found he wanted more. Then, at a time when TV stars had trouble transitioning to film work, he found movie stardom via an unconventional route, traveling to Europe to appear as a character later known as the Man With No Name in three Westerns by Italian director Sergio Leone: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. After working as a bit player for years - he first pops up in the uncharacteristic role of a lab technician in the 1955 monster movie Revenge of the Creature - Eastwood found TV stardom as Rowdy Yates on the long-running Western series Rawhide. This article was originally published in 2018 and has been updated to include the director’s latest work.Ĭlint Eastwood has reinvented himself many times over the course of a career that now stretches back over 60 years, but it’s usually taken time for everyone else to catch up with the changes. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Advertised Price for any vehicle does not include dealer-installed accessories. ![]() **PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT ANY OF OUR WELL QUALIFIED SALES ASSOCIATES FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THIS VEHICLE**PACIFIC AUTO CENTER HAS THE LARGEST SELECTION OF TRUCKS IN CALIFORNIA**PLEASE VISIT US AT PACIFICAUTOCENTER.COM.Īll prices plus government fees and taxes, any finance charges, any dealer document processing charges ($85), any electronic filing charge, and any emission testing charge. **CLEAN ONE OWNER CARFAX**TOW PACKAGE**TRAILHAWK LUXURY PACKAGE**28J CUSTOMER PREFERRED PACKAGE**5.7L V8 GAS**4WD**PADDLE SHIFTERS**POWERED LEATHER SEATS**DRIVER MEMORY SEAT**HEATING & VENTILATING FRONT SEATS**DUAL ZONE A/C**POWERED SUNROOF**PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM**NAVIGATION SYSTEM**BACK-UP CAMERA**4X4**MUST SEE AND DRIVE**LOW MILEAGE**NO ACCIDENTS**NO ISSUES**NO SURPRISES**8-Speed Automatic 5.7L V8 HEMI Power Sunroof, Power Windows, Power Seats, Power Door Locks, Memory Seats, Leather Seats, Heated Seats, Ventilating Seats, Navigation System, Premium Sound System, Back-Up Camera, Alloy Wheels, 4X4, Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, 4D Sport Utility, 5.7L V8 HEMI, 4WD, 10 Speakers, Adaptive Cruise Control w/Stop, Advanced Brake Assist, Air Conditioning, AM/FM radio: SiriusXM, Audio memory, Auto High Beam Headlamp Control, Automatic Headlamp Leveling System, Automatic temperature control, Bi-Xenon High-Intensity Discharge Headlamps, Cargo Compartment Cover, Dual-Pane Panoramic Sunroof, Front dual zone A/C, Front LED Fog Lamps, Full Speed FWD Collision Warn Plus, Jeep Advanced Active Safety Group, Lane Departure Warning Plus, LED Daytime Running Headlamps, Memory seat, Navigation System, Parallel & Perp Park Assist w/Stop, Power driver seat, Power steering, Power Tilt/Telescope Steering Column, Power windows, Quadra-Trac II 4WD System, Quick Order Package 28J (DISC), Radio data system, Radio: Uconnect 4C Nav w/8.4 Display, Rain Sensitive Windshield Wipers, Rear window defroster, Remote keyless entry, Steering wheel mounted audio controls, Trailhawk Leather Trim Seats w/Perforation, Trailhawk Luxury Group. ![]() ![]() Here's a level where a giant chain chomp chases Yoshi down a series of floating platforms. Here are those overly flappy goonie birds that you can ride like a floating platform. And here's one with those floating penguins that Yoshi can bounce off harmlessly. Oh look, here's a few levels with those annoying monkeys jumping among the trees, just like in Yoshi's Island. The game does nearly the opposite of reinventing the wheel, instead seeming to take familiar pieces of the first game and reassembling them into new patterns, to the point where an attentive player can start picking out the tropes and design elements they expect to resurface. Oh look, here's the part where you jump on happy balloons, just like in Yoshi's Island. This means, of course, that those looking for something completely new won't find much of what they're looking for in Yoshi's New Island. Familiar without being overly familiar and faithful without being a mere carbon copy, Yoshi's New Island doesn't quite live up to its namesake, but it doesn't really mess too much with what isn't broken, either. Yoshi's New Island is Nintendo's latest attempt to recapture lightning in a bottle, and it does a solid if imperfect job of doing just that. The best follow-up so far may actually be Super Mario Advance 3, a Game Boy Advance port which added six excellent new secret levels on top of those already hidden in the original game. Yoshi's Island DS was a bit better at capturing the essence of the original, but it felt a bit gimmicky in its use of new character powers and just a bit off in the control department. ![]() I had high hopes for Yoshi's Story on the Nintendo 64, but that spiritual sequel took a hard turn toward overly simplistic level designs, sloppy controls, and a presentation that turned the cuteness dial well past cloying (oh god, that level-ending music). ![]() Nintendo has tried to follow up on the perfection of Yoshi's Island a few times in the past. 3 or Super Mario World, but for my money, Yoshi's Island is the pinnacle of the 2D Mario games (and I have spent a fair bit of time thinking and writing about Mario games to reach that conclusion). Some might be more partial to Super Mario Bros. When the original game came out in 1995, it both redefined what a Mario game could be and set a new definition for inventive, original, and entertaining platform games.
